How to install your Engaige Chat Widget

Last updated: October 22, 2026

Add the Engaige chat to your website

With the Engaige chat widget, your AI agent can chat with customers right on your website. If a customer needs a real person, the agent sends the conversation to your team by email, and you can simply reply. We currently are working on a live handover feature, which will be launched soon.

Setting it up takes about 15 minutes.

1. Create your widget

  1. In the Engaige dashboard, go to Widgets and click to create a new one.

  2. Give it a name. Only your team sees it.

  3. Add your website under Allowed domains, for example example.com. Just the name, without https://. This step matters: the chat only shows up on websites you’ve added here.

  4. Make it yours: pick your brand color, the text on the chat button, and a short welcome message. You can also add up to 3 example questions customers can tap, like “Where is my order?”.

  5. Choose when we ask for the customer’s name and email. We recommend On handover: customers can start chatting right away, and we only ask for their details when your team needs to follow up. If you select Before the chat starts, customers will need to leave their e-mail address before they can actually send a message in the chat.

2. Put the chat on your website

On your widget’s page, copy the code snippet. Paste it into your website just before </body>, on every page where you want the chat. On Shopify, that’s in your theme’s theme.liquid file.

Not comfortable editing your website? Send the snippet to your web developer. It’s a quick job for them. This action needs to be done by your team, Engaige cannot install the code snippet in your code.

3. Choose where handovers go

  1. Go to Email destinations and add the email address that should receive handovers, for example your support inbox.

  2. We’ll send that address an email to confirm it. Click the link inside.

Until you click that link, the address can’t receive handovers. Can’t find the email? Check your spam folder, or resend it from the dashboard.

4. Connect your agent

  1. Open your agent and go to its resources.

  2. Add your widget. Choose Autonomous if the agent should reply to customers on its own.

  3. Add your email address as the handover target. Leave the schedule empty so handovers always go through.

  4. Optionally, write the message customers see when they’re handed over, for example: “Thanks! Our team will email you within one business day.”

  5. Save and publish your agent.

What happens when a customer needs your team

  1. The customer sees your handover message, and the chat ends.

  2. If we don’t have their name and email yet, we ask for them.

  3. You get an email with the full conversation, a short summary and the customer’s details.

  4. Just hit reply. Your answer goes straight to the customer.

Try it out

Open your website, start a chat and ask the agent something. Then ask to speak to a person and check that the email lands in your inbox.

Something not working?

  • I don’t see the chat on my website. Check that your website is listed under Allowed domains and that the snippet is on the page.

  • I can’t pick my email address as a handover target. It isn’t confirmed yet. Click the link in the confirmation email.

  • I can’t save my agent. An agent that replies on its own always needs somewhere to send handovers. Make sure your email address is added without a schedule.

  • The handover email took a while. We wait for the customer to leave their name and email so you can reply to them. If they don’t, the email is sent once the chat times out.
